Can design help the economic crisis?

I don’t think we realise as designers the power of design thinking and how it can impact on the world, especially with the present global economic crisis. We are our worst enemy, usually only being able to talk to ourselves and unable to understand the power of marketing universally when you have a product to sell – and we do have a product to sell in the present climate! By nature we are problem solvers. We understand a problem, are able to go through a process or processes to analyse, debate,… Continue

The butterfly-shape beauty and therapeutic pillow now a South African
manufactured product:

Over the past 10 years I have come to sincerely appreciate this product for
its value in reducing the aging of the facial skin, neck ache and breathing
problems.
This is not a product that will be mass produced, simply because it is
extremely labour intensive and each is hand crafted to produce the desired
quality. If all the cutting, gluing and sculpting is done before-hand, one
person can produce two complete units per day and it will therefore always
be an exclusive product.

Although these pillows fit in a standard pillow slip, each pillow is
supplied with one fitted pillow slip which could be used as a pattern to
have slips made in the desired colour and fabric as required by each
customer.

These pillows are currently manufactured in China only with a landed cost
per unit of R890. Now interior designers & decorators are able to purchase
directly from point of manufacture at R560 per unit, leaving an ample margin
for profit.

Warm Regards,
Gwen Gerber

Hi Des, I don't know if you remember me from "The School of Art and Design" 1981-1983. Well done on the Greenside Design Center and on your professorship! I saw you at Decorex - Conversations on Architecture but was unable to chat with you.

Hi Des,
I am now working for an architectural company called Louis Karol in Cape Town. I am learning a lot and really enjoying it! A student intern joined us a few weeks ago and she asked me which institution I did my studies and I answered back saying "Greenside Design Center", and she immediately responded by saying "oh, that is the College that wins all the competitions"... so I am writing to you to tell you that GDC is well respected and known for its excellence and am proud to be part of that family!

STUNNING......now I am getting closer to the "Richard Branson's" of the industry....My Grandmother always says, "Aim High" and I have followed her advice ever since, and in my career. Floors are my passion, but not just floors, but service and delivery....being able to provide a "life time" service to a client is something very rear in this world and if there is one thing I know i can offer is hard work and good old fassioned honest service. "not to mention, if its out there I will find it.....I am so pleased I found a Professor as you. Maybe I could have the honour of introducing myself in person in JHB soon...If im lucky....Thank you for joining.....and I am very impressed. Shan Hoffman.
