The Architect Africa Film Festival is fuelled by the magic of film and fired by the desire to celebrate architecture. The festival will be screening a selection of award-winning architectural films nationally and will culminate in Johannesburg with Architecture ZA 2010.

The film festival aims to create awareness of the need for thoughtful design and the important role of architecture in society. It is a rare opportunity to enjoy fascinating films and documentaries on architecture and the built environment. The films selected for the festival will explore the relationships between buildings, the lives of people who use them, and the contexts in which they are located.

Other cultural events, such as exhibitions and debates will take place at the film screenings. These aim to create awareness of major issues in architecture and construction - such as capacity building, training and education; development that is socially, economically and environmentally sustainable; and inclusive, innovative architecture that represents our society appropriately.

Some of the films that will be screened include:

A CONVENIENT TRUTH: Urban Solutions from Curitiba, Brazil. How the city of Curitiba chose to focus on problem solving when tackling the many issues that face modern cities. The film provides insight into the city as a case study for all to learn from. Le Corbusier in India takes us on a journey to India to experience some of Le Corbusier's architectural masterpieces. The award-winning documentary combines period photographs with Le Corbusier's writings, paintings and drawings. It includes interviews with his former assistants and present day eminent architects. The Barcelona Blueprint explores the secrets behind the city's turnaround from a washed-out place of industry to a world-class city, host to the 1992 Olympic Games. Architects, planners and urban designers came together to radically redevelop Barcelona.

C&CI Student Architectural Short Film Competition The Cement & Conrete Institute's Student Short Film Competition aims to stimulate an exploratory approach to moving image production. Short films investigate the spaces that shape our lives and highlight critical architectural issues such as sustainability and built /un-built /wasted contexts.

its a great tool to inspire architectural students and even potential student at high school level. Because the youth wants to be associated with glamour. and the film/colour/ sound effects, etc. may just be the pulling factor here. Maybe we need some kind of sponsorship' so that we can have these films reaching architectural schools (SA) or even high schools.

It all sounds fantastic. Sadly I will not be able to travel to Jozi however, to enjoy it all. How about coming to other culturally switched on cities like DURBAN too???????
