There are huge misconceptions when it comes to designing for good acoustics. Terms like absorption, isolation and damping are confused and misused. Material properties to achieve absorption, isolation or damping are also not fully understood. So for instance does the use of EPS (polystyrene board) and cardboard egg crates not contribute in any way to absorption, isolation or damping. Architects need to realise that "jack of all trades" is also "master of none". When it comes to good acoustic design, an Architect needs to consult an Architectural Acoustician if in any doubt. It is also the Architects responsibility to bring the subject of good acoustic design to the attention of his client..... read more and comment!
