The garden inside: 5 stunning indoor plants

Looking to add a touch of beauty and elegance to your home?

Houseplants often go overlooked by many, but no matter how practiced of a gardener you may be, there’s no overstating how far some of these indoor plants can go toward increasing the appeal of any room, adding a bright, bold touch that you and your guests are sure to appreciate, as well as greatly lowering stress levels and ensuring that the air in your home is fresh and clean throughout the day. Here are some of our personal favourites:

Snake Plant

Also known as “mother-in-law’s tongue” (or more scientifically, “Sansevieria”) this plant has 70 different varieties spread out across Africa, and is highly sought-after across the globe. The long, pointed leaves angle directly upwards and look remarkably sleek and stylish in any home. It’s also one of the easiest plants to maintain, coping extremely well with low light levels, as well as minimal watering.

There’s nothing quite like the sweet, lovely scent of lavender to keep you relaxed and happy around the house, and the bright, vivid colour is sure to attract attention. Lavender likes to show off, so make sure you place it where it can get plenty of sunlight, but it’s otherwise fairly easy to care for. It thrives in dry conditions, so ensuring that it has access to adequate drainage so that the soil avoids getting soggy is a must.

Emerald Palm

Also known by the tongue twisting name of “Zamioculcas Zamiifolia” or ZZ Plant for short, this species only rose to prominence in the mid-1990s, but has since become a firm indoor favorite. Emerald Palm is incredibly resilient, with low water requirements (being able to take as many as four months without water) and a strong tolerance for low light. It’s widely known for its remarkable air purification properties, and is often used to keep homes feeling fresh and clean.

Miniature Fruit Trees

While they are more difficult to maintain than many indoor plants, there’s no denying the touch of class an indoor fruit tree will bring to your home, easily catching the eye of your guests. There’s a wide variety to choose from, as well, allowing you to pick based on whatever fruit suits your palate. Figs, apples, and peaches being particularly popular choices.

Zebra Plant

Native to Southern Africa, the Zebra Plant is renowned for the strikingly beautiful thick white, zebra-esque stripes that adorn their leaves. The Haworthia variety is small and easy to maintain, equally happy in the sun or in indirect bright light conditions, looking particularly fetching as a decoration for your desktop.

With such a wide variety of gorgeous, eye-catching indoor plants to choose from, it’s not hard to see why they’ve become so widely beloved around the world, each boasting their own unique personality that ensures that no matter your tastes, you’ll be sure to find one that suits your home.
