Invention and Innovation – Value and Impact

How to measure the impact of “invention”? What is the value of “innovation”?

An invention or innovation has more value when impacting the greatest amount of people. Example:- Inventing a product to dig a hole. How many people have a problem digging a hole? How many need a hole to live? Can they live without a hole? These simple questions are of importance to determine criteria or simply used as a yardstick to measure the value and importance of ”Invention” or Innovation”.

How many people need homes? How many people need jobs? How many people need food? These are Abraham Maslow’s basic fundamental needs and product that all people must have to survive.

Hennie Botes, CEO moladi, invented a plastic component that clips together to form a reusable mould that is filled with mortar (sand and cement) to produce a house. This process fulfils Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of basic needs as it creates employment producing shelter. Employment is rewarded with money and money in turn is used to buy or produce food.

The aim of empowering people at the Bottom of the Pyramid is to identify appropriate technical solutions in order to tackle basic needs in developing countries.

moladi makes innovative technology available to third parties who are trained and skilled to employ the unemployed and to build for the homeless, establishing entrepreneurs. South Africa has a huge amount of unemployed people and a massive backlog in affordable homes. moladi addresses these two issues with innovation and technology, creating a solution to addresses the fundamental needs of people at the base of the pyramid, turning a problem into an opportunity.

Invention is a unique or novel device, method, composition or process. It may be an improvement upon a machine or product, or a new process for creating an object or a result. An invention may be solving a problem people don’t yet know they have.

Innovation generally refers to renewing, changing or creating more effective processes, products or ways of doing things.
