HOME-DZINE | DIY Projects – Here’s another great project from the guys at buildsomething.com – a modern nightstand – where you will find a selection of projects using a Kreg Pocket Hole Jig. We modified the design to allow for local materials; the frame is made using 16mm SupaWood and the drawer fronts are 16mm pine plywood, so that you can stain them in any wood tint.

HERE’S HOW:

Build a modern nightstand

1. Drill pocket holes at the top of the two side sections (as shown above).

2. Measure down 100mm, 280mm and 460mm on both sides and secure the drawer runners under this mark. The drawer runners should be mounted at least 16mm in from the front edge to allow for the drawer front to be flush.

3. Attach the cabinet sides to the top using wood glue and screws.

5. Drill a pocket hole at both ends of the front apron and secure in place with wood glue and screws.

Finishing

Sand all the rough edges with 120-grit sandpaper to even out small differences and then 240-grit to smooth, in preparation for painting. Wipe clean to remove all traces of dust. Pay special attention to the drawer fronts, since plywood isn’t always that smooth.

There are various options for finishing the nightstand. You can apply either acrylic or chalk paint with a paintbrush or Bosch PFS spray system, and stain the drawers with Woodoc Gel Stain or a Woodoc 5, 10 or 20 tinted or clear interior sealer. If you plan of spray painting the cabinet with Rust-Oleum 2X or Painter’s Touch, see these tips for painting SupaWood.
